Integer arithmetic exercises

These pages are available in English and Italian; the application itself is currently in English.

The Integers exercise type covers arithmetic with whole numbers. You can practise one or more operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication, division — or answer a random mix of all four.

Every test is generated the moment it starts, from the settings chosen. You can therefore begin with simple one-digit questions and later move to longer numbers, more questions or a tighter time limit.

Parameters

  • One or more operations, as you choose.
  • The number of digits in the first and second operand, from 1 to 3 or random.
  • The test length, from 1 to 15 questions.
  • The time limit, set in minutes and seconds.
  • Answers typed on the keypad, or chosen from several options.

How the generated questions behave

Divisions are generated with a whole-number result: in this mode a child never meets a remainder. Subtractions do not produce negative results.

Some combinations of settings are constrained to keep the generated question valid: for example, the first operand cannot have fewer digits than the second when subtraction or division is selected. When both operands are single-digit and division is selected, the maximum number of questions that can be generated is capped at 6.

Who it is for

Integer exercises suit those consolidating the four operations, revising times tables and division, and anyone wanting to gain speed and accuracy with larger numbers.

The settings are chosen by the learner, a parent or a teacher. Different settings can be chosen for each exercise, to raise the difficulty gradually.

Can a single operation be practised on its own?

Yes. Each operation can be chosen on its own or combined with others. In that case a minimum number of questions per operation is guaranteed, according to the total number of questions. You can also always let the system choose, in random mode.

Do divisions produce results with a decimal point?

No. In Integers mode, divisions are generated so that the result is always a whole number.

Can subtractions give negative results?

No. In Integers mode, questions with a negative result are not generated.
